META stands for Multicultural Education Theatre Arts and we chose this show because:
West Side Story is widely recognized as a work of cultural significance.
West Side Story as a follow up on our success last year with Stand and Deliver.
West Side Story is a spanking good show, one of the all-time greats.
The dancing and songs are outstanding, and Director Joe Bowen (Fiddler on the Roof, Cabaret, Pan: The Musical, and Romeo and Juliet: The Musical) has assembled a first rate stable of professional talent for musical direction and choreography. So there you have it: multicultural, educational, and fun. If you’re going to audition for one show this year, that show should be West Side Story.
West Side Story opened on Broadway in 1957. It won multiple Tony Awards then and in multiple revivals through the years. In 1961 it was adapted into a film which swept the Oscars and ranks among AFI’s Top 100 Films. One big reason for all of the accolades is . . .
